Opportunity: Health and Safety Technician

Location: Hendersonville, NC

Role Purpose:

  • To implement and systemize conformance to Coats corporate H&S standards, policies and procedures, and local legislation to ensure that a safe, healthy and compliant working environment is achieved in Hendersonville manufacturing facility.

  • To ensure that safe working practices are integrated into all activities.

  • To lead the local risk assessment program to ensure risks are evaluated and assessed, hazards are identified and controlled, and suitable countermeasures are implemented and systemized.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage implementation and continuous improvement of Coats HS Management Systems, procedures and practices, and local legislative requirements to achieve a safe and healthy working environment across all site business activities.

  • Work towards ‘Journey Zero’ in H&S record at the Hendersonville manufacturing facility.

  • Ensure all Leading Indicators H&S targets are met or exceeded.

  • Ensure the site is in the top quartile of Safety Climate Survey.

  • Integrate legal and other HS requirements into the operational business and monitor compliance.

  • Develop and implement systems to ensure that safe working practices are integrated into all activities.

  • Formulate recommendations to site leadership using risk-based prioritization of HS corrective and preventive actions and audit findings.

  • Determine, track and make recommendations to site leadership on annual HS targets and objectives.

  • Partner with line management to develop and implement site-specific action plans to achieve HS objectives and improve HS performance.

  • Lead health and safety management review program.

  • Design, develop and deliver HS training programs.

  • Implement processes so that all incidents, including near misses, and potential non-compliances are identified, reported and thoroughly investigated with appropriate and effective corrective actions taken.

  • Document and track corrective and preventive actions and ensure timely completion.

  • Develop, implement, and test emergency procedures and co-ordinate with external emergency services.

  • Ensure appropriate environmental and personal health monitoring is conducted and that industrial hygiene programs are in place and effective.

  • Manage and monitor chemical inventory, including review of new chemicals, and chemical management practices and oversee site PPE program.

  • Implement, manage and lead Generative Behavior Safety (GBS) efforts across the site.

  • Establish, track, and trend key HS performance indicators and develop reports and recommendations for improvement.

  • Lead wellness and safety promotion programs.

  • Support the operational management in the control of contractors and visitors.

  • Actively participate on the cluster North and Central America Safety Team. 

  • Lead and develop site Safety Committees.

  • Track and complete reports to support Coats corporate responsibility program.

  • Manage workers compensation claims.

Education, Qualifications & Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences or related degree.  Extensive experience and/or certification as a Safety Professional may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Minimum two years of HS professional experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Experience in developing and deploying HS programs and Best Practices.

  • Experience in risk assessment in a manufacturing environment.

  • Experienced in auditing in a manufacturing environment.

  • The ability to persuade and influence across all levels of an organization and outside of formal reporting lines.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.

  • Strong coaching, facilitating and training skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office, Powerpoint, Excel

  • Highly motivated and results-driven. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Team player with passion, drive and ability to self-start.


  • Strong understanding of Production, Quality, Engineering and Manufacturing Systems

  • Knowledge of EHS management systems including ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001

  • Ability and desire to obtain CSP/CIH highly preferred

  • Familiarity with Workers Compensation process

  • Industrial Hygiene experience

  • Nebosh and Iosh training certificates

  • Working knowledge of environmental air permitting, MACT, waste management, wastewater treatment processes, SPCC, and SWPPP and EPCRA reporting
