Key Accountability:

  • Developing new products and processes or modifying existing products in the Performance Materials and Apparel & Footwear portfolio to meet market and specific customer needs.
  • Demonstrated abilities to make long lasting relationships with current and new customers in effort to benefit both companies. *Serve as project lead on new R&D projects that are strategic to growth and success of the business. Ensure the project tools within Innovation such as Powersteering and Zenith are updated appropriately.
  • Serve as liaison and subject matter expert – particularly in the area of polymer chemistry -  between the business units and manufacturing locations both internal and external.
  • Serve as technical resource to other upstream manufacturing technologies to improve current and new performance capabilities.
  • Explore external sources of inspiration including but not limited to suppliers, universities, trade associations, exhibitions to ensure appropriate technology incorporated into the Coats’ Innovation process early in the development cycle.   Have a hands on desire to modify processes and equipment in order to deliver the new products required to meet the group goals.

Requirements:

Skills, education & expertise Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Textile Chemistry  + 5 years’ relevant work experience (or equivalent background and experience)  or Master’s degree + 3 years’ relevant experience is preferred. Requires knowledge and hands-on experience in own discipline; Familiarity with the state-of-the-art technologies in textile engineering and manufacturing, yarns, and common post-production techniques, such as dyeing and finishing. Desirable Engineering experience and Textile Engineering Expertise:
  • Expertise in interpreting performance factors into an engineered textile structure.
  • Ability to model and engineer multiple structures and realize the overall desired system of performance.
  • History of technology modification to generate unique structures.
  • Knowledge of textile chemistries and coatings and their effect on resulting textile performance.
  • Ability to inform and drive prototype creation on lab-scale / pilot machines in the Innovation hub.
  • Familiarity with material laboratories and companies that can provide testing solutions in this space.
  • A track record of building diverse, collaborative relationships, both within and outside one's parent orgnization.

Others:

  • Experience in manufacturing and new product development of engineered yarns and fabrics using textile fibers and coatings.
  • Good communication skills and ability to interface with all stakeholders in the development process including customers, manufacturing associates across multiple locations, sales & marketing group, and other development engineers to successfully and efficiently expedite samples through processing while meeting company and customers’ objectives and goals.
  • Utilize Zenith product development stage-gate system to maintain the documentation necessary to implement new processes / products into commercial mainstream production.
  • Experience in the capture of intellectual property as patents for materials, products and/or processes.
  • Provide product specifications for all new product developments and ensure that all safety and business critical new product offerings are completely defined in SAP QM system.
  • Strong team orientation and ability to collaborate.
  • Good presentation skills to convey project details (status, timelines, financial data, etc.).
  • Ability to analyze samples and determine construction and yarn content and translate information into product specifications.
  • Highly motivated, self-driven, and open-minded individual who is capable of accomplishing tasks and projects in a limited supervision environment.
  • Typical day trips to manufacturing locations but also overnight trips to customers or market events as required.
  • Strong computer skills related to data entry and tracking (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
